Job description

Join our contributor community

PortAnnotate recruits annotators, evaluators and transcribers directly across 12 countries and 13 languages. Work is remote, paid by the hour, and scheduled around you. One profile carries across every project you apply to.

About the role

Clean studio audio is the exception, not the rule.

Expect two people talking over each other, a siren in the street outside, a false start abandoned halfway through, and a sentence that begins in one language and finishes in another. You mark all of it. The mess is not noise to be tidied away, it is the exact thing the models need to learn from.

Key responsibilities

  • Transcribe audio verbatim, including false starts and disfluencies.
  • Time-align speaker turns and label each speaker consistently.
  • Mark background noise, crosstalk and code-switching where they occur.
  • Translate or review short passages between languages on your profile.
  • Flag audio too degraded to transcribe honestly rather than guessing.

Your fit

Qualification path

Required qualifications

  • Native or near-native fluency in at least one language on your profile.
  • A quiet room and over-ear headphones.
  • Accurate typing at sustained speed.
  • A good ear for accents outside your own region.

Technical expertise

Applicants should be comfortable with most of the following:

  • Audio transcription
  • Dialect and accent range
  • Native-level fluency
  • Timestamping and speaker labelling
  • Translation and review

Also useful

Experience in one or more of the following is an advantage:

  • Previous transcription, subtitling or translation work.
  • A second listed language, which roughly doubles available work.
  • Familiarity with transcription conventions and timestamp formats.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after I apply?

Your application opens at the screening stage. A reviewer checks your profile, languages and resume against the posting, and every stage appears on your application page as it moves.

What does "in review" mean?

Screening has been passed and a reviewer is assessing you against the specific requirements of the project. You will get a notification the moment that changes.

What does "accepted" mean?

You have been selected for the project. Onboarding details and the first assignment follow by email at the address on your account.

Why can I not apply to some postings?

Postings can be restricted to one country or one language. Where you do not qualify, the posting names the exact requirement you miss so you can fix your profile if it is out of date.
